The House of Lords is familiar largely in connection with a number of celebrated instances where the Lords-as the concentrated and reactionary residue of aristocratic and episcopal power-succeeded in blocking, obstructing, or otherwise delaying reformist legislation. In fact, as these nine case studies attest, the role of the House of Lords was much more complicated and much less reactionary than conventional wisdom has allowed.

This is a series of case studies illuminating the role and character of the House of Lords over two centuries, from 1714 to 1914. The figures treated in the essays include: Edmund Gibson (Bishop of Lincoln and later London), the first Earl Cowper, the Sixth Earl of Denbigh, and Lord Thurlow.
