En février 1894, Pierre Loti part pour le Sinaï. Lui qui se revendique athée, reste taraudé par une inquiétude religieuse. D'où ce voyage en Terre sainte qui lui inspirera l'une de ses oeuvres majeures, récit de voyage autant que quête spirituelle, sous forme de triptyque. Après avoir saisi l'intemporalité et la virginité du Sinaï (Le Désert), il observe minutieusement églises et pèlerins dans Jérusalem, avant de peindre des paysages en mots, les Évangiles à la main tel un guide (La Galilée).
