Jack Kirby was born August 28, 1917, on the Lower East Side of New York City. The son of Austrian Jewish immigrants, Kirby (ne?e Jacob Kurtzberg) learned to draw at an early age by copying cartoons and comic strips from newspapers and various periodicals. As a teenager, Kirby briefly attended Pratt Institute but financial concerns forced him to drop out.Kirby's first professional job was as an in-betweener on Popeye cartoons for the famed Fleischer Studios. His career in animation was short-lived though, thanks to a strike, and Kirby soon found employment at the Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate. There the artist produced a large number of strips and cartoons in a variety of styles and under several pen names. While still at Lincoln, Kirby also did work for the fledgling Eisner & Iger studio, some of which would later appear in Jumbo Comics #1 in 1938, his first published comic-book material.While working for Victor Fox, Kirby became friends with a Fox editor and artist named Joe Simon. The two would go on to form what is regarded as one of the most fruitful creative partnerships in the history of comics. Highlights of their efforts include: Captain America, Boy Commandos, Newsboy Legion, Sandman, Stuntman, Fighting American, Boys' Ranch, and Young Romance (the very first romance comic book). The Simon & Kirby team ended in the mid-1950s when Simon opted to move into the advertising field while Kirby remained in comics.In the late 1950s, Jack Kirby worked briefly for DC Comics and co-created Challengers of the Unknown and began a stint on Green Arrow short stories in World's Finest and Adventure Comics. Around the same time, Kirby would produce a syndicated newspaper strip called Sky Masters. After a time, Kirby left DC and began freelancing for Atlas Comics.Atlas Comics was in a state of flux when Kirby arrived there in the late 1950s. Sales were down and the company that once produced (as Timely Comics) Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner was now reduced to genre titles-westerns, science fiction and monster books. But then things changed. In 1961 the first issue of the Fantastic Four by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby was released and the Marvel Age of Comics was born. Kirby, along with Lee, created Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Ant-Man, The Avengers, The X-Men, Silver Surfer, and more. In 1970 Kirby left Marvel Comics and moved to their main competitor, DC Comics.In 1971 DC began publishing the Fourth World, a series of books written and drawn by Kirby. These titles were all interconnected and squarely set within the DC universe: Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, The Forever People, The New Gods and Mister Miracle. Additionally, Kirby would go on to create Kamandi, The Demon, Omac, and others.All of these characters remain firmly entrenched within the DCU to this day.Several years after launching the Fourth World titles, Kirby returned to Marvel Comics, where he created The Eternals, Devil Dinosaur and Machine Man. In the early 1980s, Kirby launched Captain Victory as the flagship title when independent comics distributor Pacific Comics threw their hat in the publishing arena. Two years later they published Silver Star. In the mid-1980s, Kirby returned briefly to his Fourth World with Super Powers and the graphic novel The Hunger Dogs.Kirby, possessor of the unofficial "King of Comics" title, has received numerous accolades and awards. Highlights include being an inaugural inductee into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1987 and receiving the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award in 1993. He and his beloved wife Roz were married for more than 50 years.Jack Kirby died February 6, 1994, in Thousand Oaks, California.
