The current outlook into the future seems to be largely informed by resignation and anxiety. The understandable scepticism which utopian visions of the future are met with today and the crisis ridden present give rise to nostalgic resorts to seemingly reliable ideas. The book The Present of the Future investigates our present relation to the future and asks which means and strategies artists and scholars pursue today, to gain a new scope of action for shaping alternative futures. How do they create potentials for change and for the imagination of possible futures beyond modernistic idealisms and romanticist projections into remote times? The Present of the Future is the result of the third annual theme of the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.

Susanne Witzgall ist promovierte Kunsthistorikerin und leitet seit 2011 das vom BMBF geförderte cx centrum für interdisziplinäre studien an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. 2003 bis 2011 lehrte sie hier am Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte. Darüber hinaus war sie als freie Kuratorin und von 1995 bis 2002 als Kuratorin am Deutschen Museum Bonn und Deutschen Museum, München tätig. Sie ist unter anderem Kuratorin bzw. Cokuratorin der Ausstellungen: Art & Brain II (1997/1998), Das zweite Gesicht (2002), Say it isn t so (2007), (Re)designing nature (2010/2011) sowie Autorin und Herausgeberin zahlreicher Bücher und Aufsätze zur zeitgenössischen Kunst und zum Thema Kunst und Wissenschaft.
Kerstin Stakemeier studierte Politikwissenschaften und Kunstgeschichte, worin sie 2010 promovierte. Sie lehrte u.a. an der Bauhaus Universität Weimar und der Freien Universität Berlin, war Researcherin an der Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. Seit 2012 ist sie Juniorprofessorin am cx centrum für interdisziplinäre studien der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Sie war Initiatorin des "Aktualisierungsraum", Hamburg (mit Nina Köller, 2007/2008) und realisierte Ausstellungen u.a. im Kunsthaus Bregenz (mit Eva Birkenstock, 2010) und der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (mit Anja Kirschner/David Panos, 2011).
