Excerpt from Sappho: Trauerspiel in Fünf Aufzügen
The sketch of the historical and traditional Sappho offered in the introduction is based upon original sources thruout; nevertheless I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the excellent monograph by Paul Brandt (cf. Bibliography, p. Xlvii). I am also indebted to W. L. Westermann, Professor of Ancient History at the University of Wisconsin, for helpful suggestions on this part of the introduction.
It would be, unjust not to acknowledge my indebted ness to the annotations of C. C. Ferrell in the edition of Sappho published by Ginn Co., especially in the rendering of difficult passages into poetic English.
