DE SI BONS AMERICAINS

D'un ton sûr, souvent cynique, John Saul nous propose sa vision originale du monde de la fin du siècle. Le seul moyen d'en parler est la comédie noire. Dans De si bons Américains, à la manière d'un roman picaresque, il observe la vie d'Américains modernes et riches, plutôt «nouveaux riches». En ami ou en simple connaissance, il se faufile dans les grands hôtels de la Riviera italienne, dans les clubs de chasse, dans les bars américains mais aussi il s'échappe de ce monde pour nous rappeler qu'il existe également des dictateurs. Tels des descendants des personnages de Fitzgerald, ces riches fils de la Démocratie dissimulent leurs drames ou bien leurs crimes dans les fastes de la vie mondaine, sans le moindre souci des résurgences totalitaires ; ils ne rêvent plus, fortune faite, qu'à l'éclat de l'aristocratie.

En écrivant ainsi sur les travers des riches, John Saul est dans la tradition de Maupassant et de Somerset Maugham, mais il parle bien de la fin du XXe siècle.
