Mirko Czentovic est inculte, méfiant, taciturne.
Ce n'est pas un secret. Son cerveau semble
fonctionner avec lenteur. Mais Czentovic est
champion du monde d'échecs, et personne
n'arrive à le battre. À bord du paquebot qui les
emmène vers Buenos Aires, un inconnu, le visage
pâle comme la mort, se décide pourtant à l'affronter.
À la surprise générale, il gagne la partie. Czentovic
propose alors à l'inconnu de jouer la revanche...
Écrit à la fin de sa vie, alors que Zweig a été contraint
par les nazis à s'exiler au Brésil, Le Joueur d'échecs
est un chef-d'oeuvre. Récit poignant d'une addiction
au jeu et des effets dévastateur de l'enfermement
et de la solitude sur la personnalité, il offre aussi
une magnifique allégorie sur la violence totalitaire
et le pouvoir salvateur de la culture.
