Petite Bibliothèque Payot/Voyageurs

La Suissesse Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942) fut tout à la fois écrivain, journaliste, photographe et archéologue. La vie de cet « ange dévasté », selon l'expression de Thomas Mann, fut marquée par une errance intérieure qu'elle projeta dans les voyages et la morphine, par des amours saphiques malheureuses ainsi que par son amitié avec Klaus et Erika Mann, auprès de qui elle s'engagea dans la lutte contre le nazisme.
Entre 1936 et 1938, elle se rendit deux fois aux États-Unis pour y mesurer les conséquences de la Grande Dépression, notamment dans les États du Sud. Au fil d'articles rédigés pour plusieurs journaux suisses, cette fille de riche industriel du textile s'attache au quotidien des gens modestes et des jeunes syndicalistes, à la misère des ouvriers et à l'exploitation éhontée des fermiers.
