Eugène Minkowski (1885-1972) est l'un des plus grands spécialistes de psychopathologie que la France ait connus. Son œuvre est structurée par une remarquable trilogie - La Schizophrénie (1927), Le Temps vécu (1933) et Traité de psychopathologie (1966) - dont voici réédité le premier volet. Il nous y donne une leçon de clarté et de précision, l'une des rares définitions sérieuses de la schizophrénie.
A partir de la philosophie bergsonienne de l'élan vital, il souligne que la base même du processus schizophrénique est une perte du contact vital avec la réalité. Ce que le schizophrène perd, ce n'est pas la possibilité d'un simple contact sensoriel avec l'ambiance, mais bien la dynamique de ces contacts, c'est-à-dire tout ce qui fait le caractère vivant de la relation du sujet à autrui.
