The very natural association of religious ideas with the heavenly bodies led to the building of temples with a definite astronomical significance, which we can trace in the Temple of the Sun at Luxor, in Stone henge, and in many other buildings of antiquity. Let us be careful, however, not to go too far in finding an astronomical meaning for every line and for every angle in such a building. At the present time there is a decided tendency to go further than strict prudence would permit; to ascribe to the builders of old a knowledge and an accuracy which the facts do not warrant; and to pretend by measurement and cal culation to arrive at the date of the building with all the authority which should attach to the solution of an astronomical problem. We shall do well to receive all such results with caution they are interesting archaeology, but their astronomy is questionable.
