J'ai été voir François Talbot, dans le grand deuil qui l'accable. Je savais faire visite à une immense infortune. J'y pre nais part nom-même cet homme semble né pour la douleur; un malheur presque constant rend cette vocation plus amère. Personne n'a mis l'amour plus haut, per sonne n'a été plus aimé que lui; mais la maladie et la mort lui ont torturé et lui ravissent tout ce qu'il aime. Ainsi l'excès de la vie, en lui, est un gage toujours renouvelé à l'excès de la souffrance.
