A Challenge of Numbers - People in the Mathematical Sciences

Because a healthy flow of mathematical talent is important for the nation's welfare, The National Research Council initiated in 1986 the project Mathematical Sciences in the Year 2000 to assess the status of college and university mathematical sciences and to design a plan for revitalization and renewal. This report describes the circumstances and issues surrounding the people involved in the mathematical sciences, principally students and teachers.
