Bambi, magnifiquement mis en images par Walt Disney, est sans conteste l'oeuvre la plus célèbre de Félix Salten (1869-1945). Publié en 1923, le roman a rencontré un immense succès avant d'être interdit et brûlé par les autorités nazies, qui voyaient dans le personnage et les aventures de Bambi une allégorie du sort des Juifs d'Europe.
En poète et en observateur de l'intolérance de son temps, Salten dépeint le destin de ce faon et de la société fragile et bigarrée qui l'entoure dans un véritable hymne à la nature : un monde de sensations, de phénomènes subtils, impalpables, cruels ou violents. Au fil des rencontres et des épreuves, le jeune chevreuil devra apprendre à vivre avec le danger, à connaître la solitude, la mort - et les hommes qui la donnent atrocement -, avant de devenir à son tour un ancien, un prince de la forêt.
