Au milieu des années cinquante, le producteur Norman Granz prend Ella Fitzgerald sous contrat avec sous le coude un « plan de carrière » discographique parfaitement mûri et méthodiquement mis en place : la chanteuse enregistrera un « album-concept » longue-durée en hommage à chacun des grands song-writers de la musique américaine : ainsi, du milieu des années cinquante au début des années soixante, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, les frères Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern et Johnny Mercer recevront-ils successivement les honneurs (mérités) de la « First Lady Of Song ». A partir de ce moment les projecteurs de la gloire ne quitteront plus Ella Fitzgerald, dont ta célébrité va progressivement s'étendre dans le monde entier auprès d'un public débordant largement celui des amateurs de jazz. Ce double CD a pour but de présenter le meilleur des trois premiers albums consacrés à ces « song books », ceux de Duke Ellington (en compagnie du duc et de ses hommes, double bonheur), de Rodgers & Hart, et de Cole Porter. Choix difficiles, tant la qualité de l'interprétation d'Ella, la richesse du matériau musical et l'efficacité des orchestrations éclaboussent ces enregistrements cinquantenaires.

In the mid-Fifties, producer/impresario Norman Granz signed Ella Fitzgerald to a contract with a career-plan which he meticulously put into practise : Ella would record one full-length « concept-album » devoted to each of the great songwriters in the American Songbook... and Ella dutifully gave her voice to the works of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. Not for nothing did she become « The First Lady of Song », a title she deserved. Ella's popularity spread way beyond jazz circles. The aim of this 2CD set is to unite the best of the first three albums she released in her « Songbook » series of recordings, those dedicated to the works of Duke Ellington (accompanied by Duke and his orchestra, what a marvel !), Rodgers & Hart, and Cole Porter. Setecting these tracks wasn't easy, due not only to the consistently high quality of her performances, but also to the richness of the repertoire and the stunning efficiency of these arrangements written and played some fifty years ago...
Those were the days, indeed.
