Zuvor, am Max-Planck-Institut für experimentelle Medizin, hat er sich mit Hirnentwicklungsstörungen und mit der langfristigen Modulation monoaminerger Systeme beschäftigt; als Heisenbergstipendiat hat er ein Labor für neurobiologische Grundlagenforschung aufgebaut.
