Excerpt from Union Wage Gains Under Regulation: Evidence From the Trucking Industry
This study estimates wage equations from a cross - section of individuat workers' wages and characteristics. The data are from the Current poputation Surveys (cps) conducted by the Bureau of the Census. Wages are tikety to be a function of four factors: workers' characteristics inciuding union status, firm characteristics, occupation and industry specific effects, and geographic wage tevets. The May Current Population Surveys (cps) provide information on most of these factors. Avaitabte data on worker quatities inctude union status, education, age, sex, race, and marital status. I controi for industry and occupation effects by Timiting the study to truck drivers emptoyed in the for-hire trucking industry. Data on worker Tocation are used to contro) for geographica) wage variation via regional fixed effects.
