Kirchen thronten. Dieser Sinn fur das Monumentale weist dem Hubert van Eyck im Norden eine ähnliche Stellung wie im Süden dem Masaccio zu. Masaccio hat unmittelbare Nachfolger nicht gefunden. Erst fast hundert Jahre nach seinem Tod, als die naturalistische Begierde ge stillt war und die Sehnsucht nach einem neuen Lapidarstil kam, wählten ihn Michelangelo und Raffael zum Führer. Ebenso wurde der Ruhm Huberts während des Quattrocento durch den Jans verdunkelt. Erst als hundert Jahre später Dürer vor dem Genter Altarwerk stand, be wunderte er mehr als alles andere die Tafeln Huberts. Vor Huberts gott-vater hatte er die Vision der Vier Apostel.
