Excerpt from Quaint Corners in Philadelphia: With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations
It is natural that such a volume should in parts bear the signs of age, and of containing statements no longer true, for Philadelphia, along with the rest of the country, has made immense strides during the last forty years. Among other things it has doubled its population and very nearly doubled the number of its buildings. But it has been believed best to allow the different chapters to remain as they were originally written, but to supplement them with a few words in this Preface. One of the original chapters has been displaced by another that out lines the development in the neighborhood of City Hall Square, a locality that had only begun to be a center of interest in 1883.
