Excerpt from Caesar in Egypt, Costanza and Other Poems

There is further reason for a Preface. Columbus at Seville' was published in 1869; secondly, in 1876; and now, for the third time, in this book. In 1880, appeared Columbus,' by the Laureate. Admitting some differences, there are more similarities: both are in Monologue, the variation being that one is a soliloquy the other an objurgation. Hence the Author of 'columbus at Seville' is on his defence; he can scarcely be unconscious how, without explanation, he might be accused of paraphrase or, at least, of reverberation anyone who takes the trouble to examine will grant this. Another distinction should be pointed to - namely, in characterization - of which, if the unanimous testimony of biographers is to be believed, there can scarcely be two Opinions.' The coincidence of current events with the publication of a record of The Alexandrine War' is noticeable.

A copy of the second edition of Columbus at Seville' was sent to the Laureate at date of publication.
