Rio Rancho's first residents arrived in the mid-1960s seeking what was advertised as 360 sunny days a year and affordable housing. Incorporated in 1981, Rio Rancho is the third-largest city in New Mexico and its fastest growing. It often pops up on those Best Places to Live stories and for good reason. Author Gary Herron, a staff writer and photographer at the Rio Rancho Observer since 2000, has been an "observer" himself of many local occurrences, and thus many of the recollections and photographs in this book are either his or the newspaper's. The earlier photographs were gathered through a wealth of research. Herron has covered sports and news in Rio Rancho, has spent countless hours at Santa Ana Star Center, is on a first-name basis with the city's "movers and shakers," and agrees that Rio Rancho is a "City of Vision," with much more to come its way to enrich the lives of its 90,000-plus residents.
