Burton avait une grande passion : percer
des secrets. En 1853, ce polyglotte qui parlait
parfaitement l'arabe, alors officier de la Compagnie
des Indes, entreprit un voyage clandestin à
Médine et à La Mecque. La ville sainte de l'islam,
interdite aux infidèles sous peine de mort, n'avait
été visitée, depuis la Renaissance, que par une
poignée d'Européens... Le récit que Burton a
laissé de son pèlerinage est un classique de la
littérature de voyage du XIX^e siècle. L'humour et
la puissance d'évocation y côtoient sans cesse la
plus époustouflante érudition.
