Karl Stephan ist emeritierter Professor für Technische Thermodynamik und Thermische Verfahrenstechnik an der Universität Stuttgart. In zahlreichen Publikationen behandelte er grundlegende Vorgänge der Wärme- und Stoffübertragung sowie die für die Thermische Verfahrenstechnik wichtigen Prozesse der Wärme- und Stoffübertragung von Mehrstoffgemischen bei Phasenumwandlungen. Er wirkte in nationalen und internationalen Fachausschüssen mit und ist Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften sowie der Deutschen Akademie der Technikwissenschaften acatech. Er erhielt zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Auszeichnungen, darunter Ehrendoktorwürden der Technischen Universität Berlin und der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle Wittenberg.
