Henrik Ibsen

Ce jeune homme, qu'Ibsen emprunte à des contes norvégiens, plein d'imagination et de rêves, nous le trouvons oisif dans sa Norvège natale, racontant des contes à dormir debout, courant après les filles, ayant le coup de foudre pour la pieuse et sage Solveig, rencontrant des êtres fantastiques (les trolls, ce grand Courbe qui lui conseille de « faire le détour »), quittant son pays natal, faisant du trafic et des affaires douteuses, traversant l'Afrique d'Ouest en Est, jouant le prophète pour une fille du désert et côtoyant la folie, avant de revenir dans sa Norvège par tempête et naufrage, sans avoir rien acquis, et nous le retrouvons vieux, aux prises avec des créatures métaphysiques lui renvoyant la question de sa vie : a-t-il été soi-même ? Ni héros ni pécheur, mais, en un sens, tellement moderne : quelconque ! Toute sa vie, il a « fait le détour » : le fera-t-il encore lorsqu'il retrouve la femme qui l'attend ? Mais il reste de lui seulement ce poème.
