McFarlane is Professor and Regents Lecturer at the University of New Mexico.'She has also been a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the University of Oklahoma College of Public Health, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She serves on the Publications Board of the American Public Health Association, the History Committee of the Population Association of America, ' was chair of APHA's Population, Reproductive and Sexual Health Section, and was a board member of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association and Planned Parenthood of New Mexico. She has consulted for numerous global and domestic agencies working in the population and reproductive health field.
