Au crépuscule de sa vie, Jean Racine écrivit en secret la tragédie de Port-Royal. Samizdat du XVII^e siècle à l'histoire éditoriale tourmentée, l'Abrégé est un plaidoyer passionné pour le monastère rebelle - y apparaissent de beaux portraits des grands lutteurs du parti janséniste : Saint-Cyran, Pascal ou le Grand Arnauld. Mais en écrivant, pour la première fois, l'histoire de Port-Royal, Racine fait aussi un retour sur son passé le plus intime. Il se souvient de la communauté fraternelle qui l'avait accueilli dans sa jeunesse, de la dispersion de ses maîtres aimés par la police du roi, de l'innocence persécutée. Pour l'orphelin Jean Racine, Port-Royal avait été une famille, une patrie d'adoption dont il nous invite à découvrir les « saintes demeures ».
