L'édition conjointe de La Soeur valeureuse et du Mausolée
rassemble deux tragi-comédies créées respectivement en
amont et en aval du Cid, et dont les différences éclairent
l'évolution d'un genre auquel la tragédie naissante a
porté des coups mortels. Exubérant quand il décrit avec
audace les amours incestueuses d'une soeur pour son frère
en 1634, André Mareschal tente en 1642 d'imiter la
gravité des amours tragiques. Mais, tandis que le décor
funèbre d'un mausolée prolonge le goût baroque pour le
macabre, les revendications libertines viennent perturber
l'apparent assagissement héroïque. Toutes deux animées
par l'aspiration à la liberté, ces tragi-comédies témoignent
ainsi de la modernité des interrogations politiques et
morales du Grand Siècle.
