De la première moitié du XVII^e siècle, époque charnière dans l'histoire du théâtre français, la plupart des comédies qui sont parvenues jusqu'à nos jours s'inspirent de comédies italiennes ou ont une origine espagnole. Un des plus importants adaptateurs de cette époque fut Antoine Le Métel d'Ouville, conteur et dramaturge normand, qui publia dix pièces de théâtre de 1638 à 1650. Il est l'un des principaux artisans du renouveau du genre comique au moment où s'élabore peu à peu le modèle de la comédie « classique », telle que l'incarne Molière. Le présent volume de son Théâtre complet est consacré à ses trois comédies adaptées de Calderón : L'Esprit follet (1642), Les Fausses Vérités (1643) et Jodelet astrologue (1646).
