After the Octopus is the action-packed, stand-on-its-own, laugh-riot sequel to After the Orange Glow. It¿s also the final installment in Mark Spitzer¿s four-part series about living the life of an outlaw poet forty years too late.
It¿s the age of Grunge and the setting is underground Seattle, where our narrator discovers that MIA thieving nympho who blew his mind in Literary France, scrambled his brain with hash in Morocco, and sent him packing to the Abyss. Adventures ensue with Lily again, danger again, lots and lots of sex again. Madness, death, weirdos, fear! But this time our femme fatale is way more human, and so is our protagonist¿who remembers what she did to him, so refuses to be whipped again.
Meanwhile, earthquake omens erupt from the crust, llamas abound, and addicts clash. Gangs, abortions, porn and angst! Till fighting the sultry suck of her spell, our hero retreats to the fabled Mountain Palace, where things have changed. Especially when Lily, down and out, shows up in the Rockies. Spitzer, however, makes a shocking decision, which leads to the Ultimate Revelation.

Mark Spitzer lived a life of monstrous passion, continuous inspiration, and constant fascination; but at 57 years, it wasn't long enough. He published nearly forty books: most about fish and the environment, plus novels, memoirs, literary translations, creative writing pedagogy, and, of course, poetry. He was a creative writing professor at Truman State University in Missouri and the University of Central Arkansas where he designed and founded the Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop. He also edited the legendary Toad Suck Review, which evolved into the poetry series Toad Suck Éditions. Having lived in the American North, South, Midwest, and West, and having traveled as much of the world as possible, he spent the coda of his most epic poem (his own damn life) loving family and friends in historic Hyde Park, New York.
