Previously he had spent some twenty years at the University of Leicester. His long-standing research interests have been in the sociology of race and ethnicity, and he is well known for his work on labour market issues and equal opportunities. He has undertaken research funded by bodies as diverse as ESRC, the Department for Education and Employment, and the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Visiting.
