Spätestens seit der unbestritten gelungenen Modernisierung des Berliner Olympiastadions ist das Hamburger Architektenteam von Gerkan, Marg und Partner auch einer breiten Öffentlichkeit als Spezialist für Sportarenen-Bau bekannt. Sowohl das spektakuläre RheinEnergieStadion in Köln, das Stadion der Freundschaft in Cottbus, die neue Commerzbankarena in Frankfurt als auch eine ganze Reihe von Maßstäbe setzenden Neubauten in den Golfstaaten, in Nordafrika oder China verdeutlichen die weltweit überragende Bedeutung des Büros in diesem speziellen Gestaltungsbereich.
Die Monografie stellt sämtliche jüngeren und noch im Bau befindlichen Sportstadien von gmp ausführlich und anhand zahlreicher Pläne und Farbabbildungen vor und wirft dabei neues Licht auf diese in ihren Grundzügen noch aus der Antike stammende Bauaufgabe.

Volkwin Marg gründete mit Meinhard von Gerkan 1965 die Architektensozietät gmp. Marg war Präsident des Bundes Deutscher Architekten und Professor an der RWTH Aachen für Architektur und Städtebau. Seit 2007 ist er Prinzipal der Academy for Architectural Culture (AAC).

Since the acclaimed successful modernization of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin at the very latest, the Hamburg architectural team of the architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner has established itself in the public eye as specialists in the field of sports-arena construction. Three soccer stadiums in Germany-the spectacular RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, the Stadion der Freundschaft in Cottbus, and the new Commerzbankarena in Frankfurt-as well as a whole series of new buildings in the Arab Gulf States, north Africa, or China have set new standards around the world. They clearly show that gmp is of outstanding importance worldwide in this special branch of design. With many plans and color illustrations, this monograph presents all of gmp's most recent sports stadiums, as well as those currently under construction. It also sheds new light on this type of building, with its long tradition reaching back to antiquity.
