Si Anton Tchekhov est l'un des auteurs de théâtre les plus joués en France, on connaît peu ses nouvelles. Il en écrivit toute sa vie durant et certaines sont la quintessence de son talent littéraire et de sa pensée. L'écriture en est toujours limpide ; en quelques pages Tchekhov nous fait le portrait d'une vie.
À partir d'un événement qui peut être minuscule - un baiser furtif, quelques mots mal compris, une allumette retrouvée qui provoque une enquête policière, etc. -, Tchekhov brosse un tableau de l'humanité qui révèle à travers un détail sa profondeur ou sa petitesse.
