Démétrios est sculpteur, séducteur, blasé.
Chrysis est courtisane, séductrice, en chasse.
Elle aime qu'un homme la suive «comme un
chien»... Le sculpteur devient le jouet de la
courtisane. Pour elle, il vole, tue, parjure.
Mais toujours Chrysis se refuse à lui. Une
nuit, Démétrios rêve qu'il possède cette
femme. Dès lors, il tient sa vengeance, le
destin de Chrysis est scellé...

Publié en 1896, ce roman de Pierre Louÿs
(1870-1925) connut aussitôt un énorme succès
grâce à un article enthousiaste de l'académicien
François Coppée qui sut y voir l'oeuvre
d'un très grand écrivain.
