Dans les années 1970, parler de « dématérialisation de l'art » consistait à rendre compte des transformations opérées en art par les approches « conceptuelles ». Ce livre expose à nouveaux frais le problème de la dématérialisation : qu'en est-il de la matérialité de travaux se déployant dans l'espace, en installations, ou se déroulant dans le temps, comme la performance ? Les contributions qu'il réunit sont moins sensibles à l'absence des objets qu'à la mise en question de leur caractère d'oeuvre d'art. Présente à l'horizon de l'art de la fin du 20e siècle, la notion d'objet vaut d'être explorée en repensant sa matérialité, telle que l'espace et le temps la mettent à l'épreuve.

In the 1970s, talking about the « dematerialisation of art » meant taking stock of the transformations effected in art by « conceptual » approaches. This book lays out the problem of dematerialisation in a fresh way. What is going on with the materiality of works that are deployed in space, as installations, or play out over time, such as performance art ? The various essays brought together here are less attuned to the absence of objects than to the questioning of their character as works of art. Looming on the horizon of late-twentieth-century art, the notion of the object is worth exploring by rethinking its materiality in terms of how space and time put it to the test.
