À partir de 1969, je commençai à ressentir une certaine insatisfaction à l'idée d'être un photographe documentaire. Je voyais un changement apparaître dans mon travail. Je passais mes nuits à lire Borges et à écouter Villa-Lobos, mes journées à dormir. Quelque chose d'important était en train de se produire dans mon subconscient.
Cet ensemble de photographies prises par Ralph Gibson entre 1960 et 1970 pose la question toujours excitante des années d'apprentissage, de formation du regard qui précèdent la maturité artistique et demeurent une source d'excitation créatrice.
Un texte de Gilles Mora et des commentaires rédigés par Gibson lui-même ponctuent les différents chapitres du livre et viennent raconter avec près de cinquante ans de recul le bonheur d'avoir voulu être un photographe au début des années soixante lorsqu'on pouvait croire en la photographie comme en un médium de tous les possibles.

Starting in 1969 I began to feel kind of dissatisfaction with the idea of being a documentary photographer. I sensed a change coming from my work. I was staying up all night reading Borges and listening to Villa Lobos, and then sleeping all day. Something important was going on in my sub-conscious.
This unique group of photographs taked by Ralph Gibson from 1960 to 1970 poses the fundamental question of the years of apprenticeship and the shaping of the vision, which precede the artistic maturity and remain a source of creative excitement. A text by Gilles Mora and comments drafted by Gibson himself punctuate the various chapters of the book and tell us with almost fifty years hindsight about his happiness in wanting to be a photographer in the early sixties, when one could believe in photography as a medium of of infinite possibilities.
