Ausgehend von dem typischen "Kreuzschraffur"-Diptychon The Dutch Wives (1975), einer Enkaustik-Wachsmalerei auf Zeitungspapier, untersucht der Band die Bedeutung des Drucks für das Werk von Jasper Johns ( 1920 in Augusta). "Druck" und "Druckerpresse" stehen dabei nicht nur für die viel gerühmten, eigenen Experimente des amerikanischen Künstlers in der Grafik, sondern auch für das Massenmedium an sich. Die Publikation zeichnet Johns häufige Nutzung von bedruckten Zeitungen und ihre materielle, zeitgeschichtliche, politische und formale Bedeutung nach. Anhand der Grafiken des Künstlers werden zudem Charakteristika der Drucktechnik aufgezeigt, welche sein gesamtes uvre durchziehen: Wiederholung, Umkehrung, Zeichenhaftigkeit, Überlagerung, Sequenzierung und Anordnung. Bezeichnenderweise sind auch die beiden Tafeln von The Dutch Wives nicht ganz deckungsgleich, ein Verweis auf das dem Medium innewohnende Problem des Kopierens.

Centering on The Dutch Wives, a double-panel encaustic-and-newsprint painting in the artist’s signature “crosshatch” motif, this catalogue explores the impact of print on the work of Jasper Johns. The two panels are imperfect duplicates of each other, thus evoking issues of replication that are native to reproductive media. The book examines “print” and “the press” in terms not only of printmaking and Johns’s celebrated experiments in that medium, but also in informational terms, tracing Johns’s frequent use of newsprint and its material, temporal, political, and formal implications. The publication also features prints and drawings by Johns that help demonstrate the aspects of printmaking that inform his entire oeuvre: repetition, reversal, indexicality, layering, sequencing, and topology.
