James Redfield studierte Soziologie an der Universität in Auburn, Alabama. Er arbeitete 15 Jahre mit motional gestörten Kindern und begann Anfang 1989, neben seinem Job als Therapeut in der Kinderhilfe sein erstes Buch zu schreiben. Als er nach einem Jahr erst ein Kapitel fertig hatte, entschied er sich, seinen Beruf aufzugeben und nur noch zu schreiben. Im Mai 1993 veröffentlichte Redfield schließlich im Selbstverlag Die Prophezeiungen von Celestine, und allein durch Mundpropaganda wurde der Titel zum Kultbuch. James Redfield arbeitet und lebt mit seiner Frau in Florida. Er gibt eine Monatsschrift mit dem Titel The Celestine Journal heraus und leitet Workshops und Meditationsgruppen, die sich mit der Veränderung des menschlichen Bewußtseins an der Jahrtausendschwelle befassen.
