Deux jeunes femmes qui ont juré de prendre un amant si elles étaient trompées, deux sémillants noceurs tout prêts à leur rendre ce service, une volcanique Anglaise qui menace de se suicider, un Londonien à l'accent marseillais, un médecin-major retraité et sa femme, sourde comme un pot, une cocotte, des grooms et un commissaire de police : Feydeau réunit dans un hôtel tous ces personnages qui, pour la plupart, ne doivent à aucun prix se rencontrer et il les jette dans une course haletante de chambre en chambre, au milieu de portes qui claquent et de sonneries qui se déclenchent.
