Pseudo-drame créé au théâtre du Quartier Latin en février 1953 et l'une des pièces préférées d'E. Ionesco. On y trouve un éloge du théâtre non réaliste, ou la critique des conventions. L'intrigue n'est guère résumable : l'itinéraire qui mène Choubert, homme doux et timide, du mariage à une mort cruelle en passant par une descente aux enfers, et des moments d'illumination magique.
