Zusatztext A thorough and wide-ranging study, into which Clarke adeptly weaves so many strands. The reader benefits from Clarke's intimate knowledge of Oaxaca, gained over many years of field research and from his meticulous approach to the data ... The volume contains an appealing mix of the qualitative and the quantitative, well supported by maps, diagrams and photographs ... undoubtedly an excellent addition to the Oxford Geographical and Environmental Studies Series. Klappentext The land reform in Mexico that followed the Revolution of 1910-17 helped to reconstitute peasant communities in the lowland areas of Oaxaca, one of the poorest of the states, as a complement to the peasantries which had persisted from early colonial times at the higher altitudes. This book examines the history, production systems, and life styles of these communities, focusing in particular on their structure, ethnic movements, and politicalparticipation. Zusammenfassung The state of Oaxaca has been studied intensively and presented here is an overview of rural communities in the 20th century. The study is rooted in the colonial and post-independence period but concentrates primarily on the post-revolutionary period.
