Le roi Henri II Plantagenêt n'a pas voulu entendre l'avertissement de Thomas Becket, son plus fidèle complice et son conseiller, et l'a nommé archevêque de Cantorbéry. Dans l'Angleterre du XII^e siècle, le pouvoir royal et le pouvoir ecclésiastique, incarnés par ces deux personnalités, vont alors se heurter.
La trame historique sur laquelle se fonde ce drame confère aux grands thèmes anouilhiens de l'amitié trahie et de la solitude de l'être une résonance neuve.
