Les Possédés sont une des quatre ou cinq oeuvres que je mets au-dessus de toutes les autres. À plus d'un titre, je peux dire que je m'en suis nourri et que je m'y suis formé. Il y a près de vingt ans en tout cas que je vois ses personnages sur la scène. Ils n'ont pas seulement la stature des personnages dramatiques, ils en ont la conduite, les explosions, l'allure rapide et déconcertante. Dostoïevski, du reste, a, dans ses romans, une technique de théâtre : il procède par dialogues, avec quelques indications de lieux et de mouvements. L'homme de théâtre, qu'il soit acteur, metteur en scène ou auteur, trouve toujours auprès de lui tous les renseignements dont il a besoin.
Aujourd'hui, voici Les Possédés sur la scène. Pour les y porter, il a fallu plusieurs années de travail et d'observation. Et pourtant, je sais, je mesure tout ce qui sépare la pièce de ce prodigieux roman ! J'ai simplement tenté de suivre le mouvement profond du livre et d'aller comme lui de la comédie satirique au drame, puis à la tragédie.
