Le Bagne


Le Bagne est la queue de comète carcérale de Genêt : de 1942, où il ébaucha Haute surveillance, à 1964, où il abandonna la rédaction du Bagne, Genêt n'a cessé d'ériger l'enfermement en idéal d'une vie essentialisée, car proche de la mort. Cayenne est pour lui le nouvel Éden, paradis perdu auquel seul le crime permet d'accéder, auquel seule la surenchère dans le crime permet d'ajouter un éclair de totale réalisation de soi avant que le couteau de la guillotine n'en vienne sanctifier la perte. À ce jeu de qui perd gagne jouent les forçats Rocky, Ferrand et Forlano : d'abord rivaux, ils finiront par reconnaître qu'ils sont à égalité de haine et de pouvoir pour tromper et ridiculiser les maîtres du bagne. Dans ce lieu clos s'anime, traitée avec humour et sarcasme, une société d'exclus - bagnards aussi bien que gardiens -malfaisants et retors, tout ensemble lucides et aliénés par leurs rêves.

Le Bagne met un point d'orgue en même temps que de suspension à l'oeuvre théâtrale de Genêt.
