This monograph provides a brief overview of non-European art. The art presented in this work shares a common thread, that of magic. Magic in the religious sense of the word, somewhere between the material world and the Beyond, but also more specifically in the sense of « magical art », the term used by the surrealists. This was how André Breton referred to the link between the human condition and the poetic supernatural, as well as the practice of delving into these realms of consciousness, the source of pure creation. He consequently championed « ingenious amateurism » against « official European art ». These traditional folk arts from other continents have helped to regenerate modern awareness and are the source of today's arts. They have finally won their legitimate place in the artistic history of humanity.
