En commandant cette pièce pour
les jeunes filles de Saint-Cyr, Mme
de Maintenon a offert à Racine
l'occasion d'inventer ce qui a pu lui
apparaître comme la forme idéale
de tragédie, qui ferait alterner harmonieusement
le dramatique et le lyrique, les émotions propres au
tragique et l'émotion due aux cantiques, le déclamé
et le chanté, l'alexandrin régulier et le vers mêlé, une
forme supérieure d'émotion théâtrale, au service de
la plus grande gloire de Dieu. On comprend ainsi
pourquoi le poète a eu à coeur de transformer ce qui
était à l'origine une expérience pédagogique en une
expérience poétique d'un genre inconnu.
On sait que la pièce raconte comment Esther, épouse
d'Assuérus, obtient de son époux la grâce de son peuple
et de son oncle Mardochée, malgré les complots du
redoutable ministre Aman.
