La place Royale

La Place Royale affiche son titre comme
une plaque de rue. Et comme une
déclaration d'intention. En situant
ainsi ostensiblement sa pièce dans le
dernier quartier à la mode, le jeune Corneille
dépouille la comédie sentimentale de la convention
pastorale sous laquelle elle se présentait jusqu'alors.
Mais il fait plus. En créant, dans ce champ clos de
l'apprentissage amoureux, un personnage qui met
face à face les élans du coeur et les exigences de sa
propre liberté, il invente avec Alidor le prototype du
héros qui se veut maître de lui comme de l'univers.
Et que cette expérience n'aille pas, dans ce qui
n'est encore ici qu'un jeu de l'amour et du hasard,
sans violence ni cruauté dit assez que la comédie
ouvre déjà, en 1633, avec La Place Royale, la voie aux
grandes vibrations tragiques du théâtre à venir.
