Chatterton

On ne joue plus Chatterton depuis longtemps. C'est donc le moment de le lire. Car s'il y a une pièce qui montre le drame de l'artiste méconnu, condamné à la misère et à la mort, c'est bien celle-là. «C'est l'histoire d'un jeune homme, nous dit l'auteur, qui a écrit une lettre le matin, et qui attend la réponse jusqu'au soir ; elle arrive, et le tue.»
Vigny prend le parti de la poésie contre la société, ce qui est une nouveauté dans l'histoire de la littérature. A partir de là, on aura deux publics : les happy few et les autres.
Il faut aussi souligner le rôle de la femme dans cette œuvre. Le jeune poète est, en effet, aimé par une créature angélique. C'est elle qui permet à Chatterton de devenir un vrai poète. La société l'emporte, et empêche le couple de s'unir.
Il s'agit donc d'une pièce à la fois sentimentale et très intellectuelle : Vigny prêche pour un «drame de la pensée». Loin des foules du théâtre romantique ou shakespearien, il écrit une tragédie épurée, celle du désespoir moderne. C'est lui qui a inventé le poète maudit.
