Das Semantic Web wird als Erweiterung des bestehenden World Wide Web dahingehend gesehen, dass Inhalte mit semantischer Auszeichnung versehen werden und damit durch Softwareprozesse (besser) verarbeitet werden können. Grundlegende Konzepte sowie bestehende und künftige Anwendungen und Dienste des Semantic Web Web und Semantischer Systeme standen im Mittelpunkt des internationalen Symposiums "Semantics 2005", das vom 23.- 25. November 2005 im TechGate Vienna stattfand. Die Oesterreichische Computergesellschaft (OCG), die Semantic Web School - Centre for Knowledge Transfer (SWS), NIWA WEB Solutions und das Österreichische Kompetenzzentrum für Neue Medien, das Salzburg NewMediaLab (SNML), waren die Organisatoren der Veranstaltung. Dieser Tagungsband enthält die Beiträge der Vortragenden aus Wissenschaft und Industrie sowie die Zusammenfassung der Plenarveranstaltungen. The Semantic Web is seen as an extension to the existing World Wide Web towards (better) processing of semantically marked-up content through software processes. The underlying concepts as well as existing and upcoming applications and services of the Semantic Web and Semantic Systems were at the centre of the international symposium called"Semantics 2005". The symposium took place in Viennas TechGate (23. - 25. November 2005) and was organised by the Austrian Computer Society (Oesterreichische Computergesellschaft, OCG), the Semantic Web School - Centre for Knowledge Transfer (SWS), NIWA WEB Solutions and the Austrian Competence Centre for New Media (Salzburg NewMediaLab, SNML). These proceedings contain the contributions of speakers from both research and industry organisations as well as the summaries of plenary meetings.

Siegfried Reich studierte Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsinformatik an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Promotion 1995 in Wien zum Thema Interoperabilität von Workflowsystemen. 1996 - 1999 Arbeit als Lecturer am Dept. of Electronics and Computer Science der Universität Southampton, Arbeitsschwerpunkt: Offene Hypermediasysteme. 2000 Habilitation für das Fach Angewandte Informatik in Linz. Seit 2002 wissenschaftlicher Leiter der Landesforschungsanstalt Salzburg Research.
