About the author

Louise K. Blight is a conservation biologist and writer with a research interest in seabird ecology and a PhD in Zoology from the University of British Columbia. An Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria’s School of Environmental Studies, she has authored more than fifty scientific publications, including the academic book Marine Historical Ecology in Conservation, and was Managing Editor of the scientific journal Marine Ornithology from 2016 to 2023. She now serves as the co-chair of the Birds Specialist Sub-committee of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, the expert national body that assesses threatened species under the federal Species at Risk Act. She lives in unceded Coast Salish territory on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, with her partner Iain, their poodle Poppy, and an indoor cat named Buster Kitten. She is profoundly grateful to the birds, lands, and waters that have taught her so much, and continue to teach her.
