Max Bill (1908-1994), Schlüsselfigur der europäischen Moderne, war ein Universaltalent: vollendeter Maler, Bildhauer, Architekt, Designer, Grafiker und Typograf; eminenter Theoretiker, Lehrer und Kurator; vielfältig produktiver Publizist. Von der Schweiz und Deutschland aus baute er ein weltumspannendes Netz von Künstlerinnen und Protagonisten des Modernismus auf. Er engagierte sich für diverse gestalterische, aber auch für gesellschaftliche und politische Themen und förderte den internationalen Dialog. Dieser vielgestaltige Austausch, der Brückenschlag zwischen Ideen, Menschen und Kontinenten, war für Bills Schaffen zentral.
Diese englischsprachige Monografie, die anlässlich einer grossen Ausstellung im Berner Zentrum Paul Klee erscheint, rückt erstmals Max Bills weitverzweigtes Netzwerk in den Fokus. Neben rund achtzig von Bill gestalteten Gebrauchsgegenständen, grafischen Erzeugnissen und Kunstwerken stehen auch Werke von Künstlerkolleginnen und -kollegen. Die thematischen Essays beleuchten sein Werk aus neuem Blickwinkel und veranschaulichen seine Beziehungen zu Kunstschaffenden in Dessau, Paris, Zürich, São Paulo, Buenos Aires und New York.
