Matthau nelle insolite vesti di ironico pirata, il Capitan Red, naufragato con il suo mozzo ''Ranocchio'', riesce a salire clandestinamente su un galeone spagnola. Una volta scoperti, i due sobillano la ciurma, se ne impadroniscono e dopo una sarabanda di avventure (Ranocchio nel frattempo s'innamora di dolores, bella nipote del governatore di maracaibo) Capitan Red riesce a giocare gli spagnoli e il governatore. Ma non per molto tempo. Dopo spari, combattimenti e imbrogli di ogni genere, i due si ritrovano di nuovo su una zattera.
